Burning Regulations

Outdoor burning in Mason County is regulated to protect public safety, air quality, and surrounding property. Before burning yard debris, residents should always check current burn restrictions and confirm they are outside Urban Growth Areas where cleanup burning may be prohibited. Only natural vegetation grown on the property may be burned—burn barrels, garbage, construction debris, treated wood, plastics, and other prohibited materials are illegal to burn.

When residential burning is allowed, burn piles must be kept small and safely managed. Fires should be no larger than four feet in diameter, located at least 25 feet from structures or combustible materials, and attended at all times with water and tools available to extinguish the fire. Burn only during calm weather conditions, never add material after dusk, and fully extinguish fires before leaving the area. Residents should always check for seasonal burn bans before burning.
