FIRE SUPPRESSION
South Mason Fire & Rescue provides fire protection and suppression for 52 square miles of South Mason County. This includes responses to structure fires, wildland fires, vehicle fires and more. South Mason Fire & Rescue staffs a fire engine 24/7 at Station 46, as well as the capability to respond with a brush truck or water tender depending on the call.
We also provide fire suppression resources to fire districts in the region through mutual aid agreements. These agreements also provide us with additional resources for larger incidents within our fire district.
South Mason Fire & Rescue also participates in the Washington State Fire Service Mobilization Plan, which allows us to send wildland fire suppression resources such as personnel, brush trucks or water tenders to wildland fires around the state when local jurisdictions are overwhelmed. Mobilization responses are reimbursed, and resources are only sent from South Mason Fire & Rescue if we are able to maintain operational readiness within our fire district.
EMERGENCY MEDICAL SERVICES
South Mason Fire & Rescue provides Basic Life Support (BLS) level emergency medical services. All of our career firefighters are also trained as Emergency Medical Technicians. We provide BLS transport services maintaining a 24/7 Aid Unit staffed at Station 46.
Additionally, some South Mason EMTs have additional training as IV Technicians to further expand the level of care we are able to provide the community.
Technical Rescue
South Mason Fire & Rescue is a participating agency in the Mason County Special Operations Rescue Team (SORT), which is operated by the Mason County Sheriffs Office. The Mason County SORT provides responses to high angle rope rescues, swiftwater rescues, as well as wilderness rescues. The Special Operations Rescue Team is a county wide resource and often responds to remote, rugged wilderness areas around the county for injured hikers, vehicle accidents, or water rescues.
Selected South Mason firefighters are also trained as rescue swimmers, allowing them to quickly enter the water to perform surface water and underwater searches and rescues. Rescue swimmers allow the initial arriving firefighters to begin rescue efforts prior to the arrival of specialized water rescue resources.
